Make Your Own Lip Gloss or Lip Balm

EveryLastPenny.com reader Anonymous writes :

Use your old used-up lipsticks to make yourself a free lip gloss that's exactly the color you like.

Mix the following ingredients together in a bowl:
  • 1/4 tsp. of vegetable oil shortening (such as Crisco®)
  • the remains of an old lipstick (if you use 2 remains, double the shortening)
Once the ingredients have been mixed:
  • Heat the mixture in the microwave for 10-20 seconds, stir with a toothpick
  • Pour the mixture into a small container such as an old eye shadow box or a sample cosmetic size jar
  • Refrigerate for 1/2 hour
It's often difficult to find just the right shade of lip gloss but since you're using lipstick you've already chosen, it will be just perfect.

And don't forget to save those old lipstick tubes! When they are thoroughly cleaned they're great for purse-sized pill boxes or for pins or toothpicks.

Thanks Anonymous for the great tip! It's probably a good idea to put the lip gloss in an air-tight container to prevent the home made lip gloss from leaking into your purse!

Though I haven't tested them, more recipes for making lip gloss and lip balm can be found Here, Here and Here.
