Save Money on Hair Cuts and Hair Styles

A men's hair cut can run anywhere from $15 to $40 dollars (plus tip) depending where you live. Most people’s hair grows at an average rate, which means you need about 8-12 hair cuts a year to keep looking good. When you do the math, it adds up to a lot of money.

To save money on hair cuts, try going to a local barber college. Typically they only charge $6-$7 which is less than half of what you pay a professional. You will be worked on by a student who is under the guidance and watch of their teacher.

It is very affordable but it generally takes longer than normal. Since they are students learning the trade, you might not get the most perfect cut... but that's no big deal since a bad hair cut only lasts a couple of weeks.

I definitely only recommend this for guys who like to keep their hair short. If you have longer hair, you might be taking a bit more of a risk.

To find a barber college near you, try a Google search for barber college, beauty college or hair school in your area, or *gasp* go old-school and use a phone book.

If you're not too fond of the idea of a student working on your hair, consider trying out a cheaper barber or stylist than you are currently using. It is so common to pay extra at a fancy salon but not actually get better service. There really doesn't seem to be much of a relationship between price and quality.

As a couple of examples, I used to pay $28 at a salon and I switched to a barber who charges $13 and does a better job. For years my wife got her hair colored and styled at a chic salon for $140. She recently got referred to an independent salon by a friend and tried them out - they did just as good a job and charged only $70!
