Save On Popcorn At The Movies

EveryLastPenny.com reader Mike S. writes:

One of the most expensive aspects of theater movies is the price of snacks, specifically popcorn! Most movie theaters in Canada and the USA, charge around $5.50 for a medium buttered popcorn. So, two people on a movie outing will drop $11.00 on this munching snack. The medium size popcorn is often more than one person can comfortably eat, so whatever is leftover is usually left behind or sometimes taken home.

Consider instead purchasing the large size popcorn and sharing it. It typically costs only about $1.00 more than the medium size but contains about 50% more popcorn. To share the popcorn conveniently, bring a reasonable size brown bag from home and divide the large popcorn in half. That way each person has their own bag and gets about 75% of the amount of popcorn that is in the medium size.

This is enough popcorn to satisfy a snack craving, and the savings here are about $4.50. If a typical family of 4 goes to the movies, then the popcorn saving is about $9.00 a visit. If a couple goes out to a movie once a month and buys popcorn each time, this technique saves $54.00 over the course of a year. At today's admission prices that's close to 5 more theater admissions.

Thanks Mike S. for your great tip! Some theaters offer free refills on the largest popcorns, so that could work to your advantage as well!
