Save On Dry Cleaning - Clean Oil Spots From Your Clothes

If your garment comes out of the dryer and has an oil stain on it, don't throw it away or take it to the dry cleaner. You can clean that oil spot out for mere pennies - even if the oil spot has "permanently set".

Simply take a small piece of cotton and saturate it with paint thinner (mineral spirits) or lacquer thinner for tougher jobs, and then dab it on the oil spot. Rub the solvent into the spot to ensure it breaks up the set-in oil. Work fast - the solvent tends to evaporate quickly and you want to get the process completed before it evaporates and leaves a ring.

Paint thinner and lacquer thinner are strong solvents, so make sure you wear appropriate protection. And don't use too much solvent, you'd be surprised at how little you actually need. A quarter of a thimble-full is probably too much.

Once you've applied the solvent and rubbed it into the oil spot, apply a stain pre-treatment such as Shout® or Spray & Wash® and then immediately wash it in your washing machine as usual with the correct amount of laundry detergent.

Once washing is complete, dry the garment outside in the fresh air. You should not put a garment that has solvent on it in a clothes dryer.

This tip should save you at least $5.00 by avoiding a trip to the dry cleaners.

Note: Though I have never had a problem with any type of fabric / color, best practices dictate that you should try a miniscule amount of the chosen solvent on an inconspicuous area first. Solvents could melt plastic overlays and screen printing, so use with care.
