Time Your Cigarettes

With a cheap cigarette timer, you can save up to $13 per month by having just 1 less cigarette per day. With this technique, you aren't likely to experience any withdrawal symptoms, so it's pretty easy.
  1. For a week, keep track of how many cigarettes you smoke each day - use this to find out how many you smoke per day on average.

  2. Figure out how many minutes per day that you're awake. To get this number, multiply the number of hours that you are awake by 60. For example, if you are awake 16 hours per day, you get 16 x 60 = 960 minutes.

  3. Figure out how long you should wait between cigarettes which will allow you to smoke 1 less per day. To do this, take the number of cigarettes you smoke per day, and subtract 1. Take the number of minutes you are awake per day, and divide by this new number.

For example, if you smoke 16 cigarettes per day and are awake for 960 minutes, use this formula:
    960 ÷ 15 = 64 minutes between cigarettes.

  4. Buy a cheap kitchen timer to use as your cigarette timer - they are often available at the dollar store.

  5. To avoid temptation, move your cigarettes out of sight, into a drawer or into another room. Keep your cigarette timer nearby.

  6. Set the timer for the appropriate number of minutes. When the timer rings, reset it and begin timing again, then light your smoke. (Don't wait until you're done your smoke to begin the timer again).

  7. Do not ever have your cigarette before your timer rings.

So, how exactly does this work out to a savings of up to $13 per month? Well, depending on how much you smoke and how much cigarettes cost in your area, you may save more or less.

Where I live, cigarettes are $11 per pack, which works out to $0.44 each. So if you smoke 31 less cigarettes per month, you would save $0.44 x 31 = $13.64

When you get accustomed to smoking just 1 less cigarette per day, try reducing by another one. You never know, you might end up quitting!
