Recycle Drink Cans

This is a great money making tip for kids, teens and students. I used it to earn my spending money all through my years of schooling.

You can earn about $5.00 from your local scrap dealer for a garbage bag full of aluminum drink cans. Now where are you going to get all those cans?

Here are some ways to get lots of cans, sorted by least effort to most effort:
  • Ask your family and friends to save their cans for you. Some people will be concerned about having leaky cans cluttering up their home, so make it as easy as possible for them. Give them a leak-resistant container made out of free boxes and bags from the grocery store.

  • If your city has a recycling program, make recycling day your opportunity to get some exercise and some free cans. Bring your bag and go for a walk down the back lanes, picking the cans out of the recycling bins. Even though material in recycling bins is usually rinsed, you should still wear gloves to protect yourself from cuts and contamination.

  • Start your own mini recycling operation. If you spot a place where can drinks are sold or consumed but you don't see a can recycling bin, ask if you can set one up and tell them that you will take care of disposing of the cans for free. Good places to ask are at your office, church, club, community center, or small local restaurant. You can make your own leak-proof recycling bins by purchasing a cheap rubbery garbage bin and cutting a can-sized hole in the top. Using your Free Permanent Marker, write RECYCLE - CANS ONLY on the top and side.

Always store your bags of cans outside to avoid messy cleanups, and only make the trip to the scrap dealer when you've saved several bags. It costs gas to drive to the scrap dealer, so make every trip count!
