When purchasing over-the-counter medications or drugs, save money by avoiding name-brand products wherever possible. Instead, buy the generic equivalent or the supermarket house brand if its available. You can often get the equivalent drug for half price or even cheaper!
Generic and house brand drugs can be just as effective, because the active ingredients are exactly the same as the costly name-brands. For example, Acetylsalicylic Acid (Aspirin®) is the same chemical regardless what label is on the bottle. The same is true of vitamin formulations.
Similarly, if you are getting a prescription from your doctor, ask him or her to prescribe the generic equivalent drug if one is available. Doctors will often prescribe a costly name-brand by default, so make sure you talk to them about the generic options!
