In the winter, we often get into the habit of coming home from work, plugging in the car and then unplugging it in the morning when leaving for work. This costs about $0.50 per day in electricity.
But your car really only needs to be plugged in for 2 hours prior to driving. If you reduce the amount of time your car is plugged in to only two hours a night, you can reduce the electricity cost to $0.08 per day. This translates into a monthly saving of around $12.60.
There are a few ways to go about it:- Think about when you really need to plug in your car. Most experts recommend that you plug in your car when the temperature reaches -4°F or colder (-20°C). If it's not going to be colder than that, consider leaving your car unplugged.
- Consider purchasing an electronic timer and program it to come on 2 hours before you leave for work. This is the most convenient option because it allows you to leave your car plugged in all night without wasting electricity.
- Generally leave your car unplugged, and plug it in 2 hours before you plan to drive. This may not be convenient, and it does require planning in advance.
